3D Robotics Solo Drone featured

When my sister got married in March, I was amazed to see drones being used to make aerial shots. It was my first time to see actual drones being used for photography and I can just imagine how great the photos turned out!

If you’re into photography and are interested in capturing awesome aerial shots, head over to Best Buy — the ultimate destination for drones, including the new Solo™ by 3DR. Solo, the Smart Drone, has arrived in over 400 Best Buy stores on June 8, just in time for Father’s Day!

The 3DR Solo Drone is the first-ever drone powered by two integrated Linux computers, making capturing the perfect shot easy for anyone. Solo runs two 1GHz computers — one on the drone itself and one in the controller — connected via a powerful dedicated Wi-Fi signal. This allows Solo to use the one-of-a-kind computer-assisted Smart Shot modes to fly itself so you can focus on shooting images.

Solo can define its own flight, freeing users to focus on getting the shot. This intelligent drone is also the first to support full control of GoPro® cameras and deliver live HD video either wirelessly to your mobile device or through the controller’s HDMI port for live broadcasts.

Solo can be configured in various Smart Shot modes and fly itself so you can shift your focus from flying the drone to the camera.

On Cablecam mode, you can lock Solo onto a virtual cable between any two points in space. Then, using just one stick on the controller, you can move Solo up and down the cable. This lets you freely pan and tilt the camera while the drone stays in steady flight. Solo can even memorize your first and last frames and pan the camera between them. On Orbit mode, Solo can automatically circle a subject of your choosing, keeping the camera pointed inward to capture an iconic wraparound shot. Adjust the circle’s radius to get the exact frame you want, even midflight.

On Selfie mode, Solo will fly up and away, keeping the camera centered on you so the scenery around you expands in a dramatic aerial pullout shot — all in just one touch. And on Follow Me mode, you can go completely hands-free. Solo can follow where you go, automatically keeping the camera on you to capture your every move. Very nice!

The Solo retails for $999. And right now, Best Buy has a promo for 3DR Solo purchases! Get a FREE Solo Smart Battery (SKU: 5354101; a $149.99 value) when you purchase the 3DR Solo Drone. Valid from June 7 through July 11 at Best Buy. Offer valid with purchase of the 3DR Solo Drone SKU: 5351035

  3. I have 2 nephews that are totally addicted to this kind of things and they r super good at the robotics and all it involves, they even compete sometimes. I don’t know a lot about it but your review was awesome. I’m sure there will be a lot of people going out to invest in one after reading this

  4. i love the power of linux – it just doesn’t get bogged down. i bet these drones run great! it would have been so awesome to have this tech at my wedding.

  5. Wow it’s hard to believe they already have these with all the features you’ve described here! It looks like it would be pretty easy to fly! Computers are making robotics(and everything else) faster and robotics are making computers faster! The world’s really changing at an extreme rate! Hard to believe the difference in everything today as compared to a hundred years ago!

  6. I’ve been wanting a drone from the first time I saw one. I like that the controller has a screen on it so you don’t need a mobile devise.

  7. I’d probably get bored with the drone after first use; but a drone with a camera!, I don’t think that’d ever get old, lol. Awesome.

  8. My husband is a huge outdoors guy always taking on adventure, this would be awesome to see what kind of videos and pictures he could capture with this. Love the overall look on this one compared to others I have seen.

  9. I’m guessing at some point, someone will take it too far and invade another persons privacy and get sued.Famous people have enough trouble with picture camera spying as it is.
