It’s back-to-school season and many of us parents are now making sure that our kids are ready for their first day of school. August 22 marks the first day of Kindergarten for my son and I’m both excited and nervous. Sometimes I feel like I’m more nervous because I don’t see an inch of anxiety in him — which, I guess, is good. I’d rather be the nervous one so he can enjoy his first day at school.

We’ve bought the usual school supplies so that he’ll have all that he needs for school work. But aside from that, we also need to make sure our kids are ready for school health-wise.

At least 2 weeks before the first day of school, we established a schedule/routine similar to a regular school day. This means adjusting sleep and wake times, as well as meal times. We don’t want our kids to not have the right energy levels at school because of lack of sleep.

We also made sure our son’s vaccines are up to date. We feel it’s important to make sure that my son is immune to diseases. Not only because we don’t have him to miss school days, but mainly because I feel bad whenever my son doesn’t feel well. You know, like sometimes you just wish you were the one who’s sick instead of your kid.

Stanford Children’s Health has published some Back to School vaccination tips on their website and it’s worth reading. Stanford Children’s Health is an obstetrics and pediatric healthcare network, with Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at its core. They’re a respected health institution and I highly recommend that you browse through their website for more articles on children’s health. It’s good to read tips from experts who actually know what they’re talking about — especially when it comes to our children.
