The Seventh Dwarf DVD Review

It isn’t a secret that I love fairy tales. And I love shows and movies that put a different spin on the classics that we’ve grown to love. So I was really excited to have had the chance to receive a BluRay and DVD copy of The Seventh Dwarf from Shout! Factory.
The Seventh Dwarf

It’s the eve of Princess Rose’s 18th birthday. Everyone in the kingdom has come to Fantabularasa Castle to celebrate including Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella and Red Riding Hood. But just before the stroke of midnight Bobo, the youngest dwarf, accidentally pricks the finger of Princess Rose (a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty) with a cursed needle and sends the kingdom into a century-long slumber!

To find Rose’s true love Jack to save her with a kiss, Bobo and the other six dwarfs must go on a treacherous journey, face a fiery dragon and outwit the jealous, scheming and evil witch, Dellamorta!

The Seventh Dwarf features an exceptional voice cast of Peyton List (Disney Channel series Jessie and Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Norm MacDonald (The Middle, Saturday Night Live), internationally renowned singer and actress Nina Hagen and newcomer Joshua Graham.

The movie is not really a retelling of one fairy tale but more of a mashup of a number of stories. And I like how they didn’t let the classic plots limit the personalities we see in this movie. The central plot is based on Sleeping Beauty, but you’ll see several familiar characters like Snow White, Merlin, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood (with the big bad wolf). The seven dwarfs of Snow White are there but they have different names (as is also the case for Sleeping Beauty who in this film is Princess Rose).

The songs in the movie are really nice. I actually liked them. And I think children will definitely find the musical numbers entertaining.

All in all, THE SEVENTH DWARF is a cute movie for kids. It teaches a lesson about friendship and teamwork and I think it’s a good addition to our DVD collection.

Join all the characters you love in a delightful new adventure! The Seventh Dwarf will be out on DVD and 2-disc BluRay 3D combo pack and will be released in stores everywhere on August 18th!

Pre-order your copy now! The DVD and 2-Disc Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack contains Character Profiles, Sing-Alongs, and a Downloadable Royal Birthday Invitation.

I received a DVD copy of The Seventh Dwarf for purposes of evaluation. Thoughts are my own.

  3. I’ve seen this movie mentioned on lots of blogs lately but haven’t read anything about it because just by (‘judging the book by it’s”) cover, it just looked like cheaper movie made only for little kids. Maybe I was wrong 🙂 if it’s ever on Netflix I’ll give it a chance and check it out 🙂

  4. I will have to get this dvd for my niece to watch. I like how it has a mixture of different fairy tale characters in the storyline. Thank you for the review. 🙂

  5. Cracking up at the castle’s name. Fantabularasa. fan Tabula Rasa – Tabula Rasa was the name of the 3rd episode of season 1 of LOST and it means “blank slate.” I wonder if people involved in this were LOST fans?

And Sleeping Beauty was called Briar Rose when she was growing up in the forest with Flora, Fauna, and Merriweather.

    Sounds like a cute movie!

  6. This sounds cute. I like it because, as you say, it’s not the story that we know being retold.

  7. I love the use of multiple nursery rhymes characters to create a new twist to an old story. Plus when you add music, you encourage children to become engaged in the story.
