Christmas

I’ve always associated Christmas with giving, receiving, and sharing. And I can even sense that, somehow, people are nicer during this time of the year. I guess it’s because the holiday season is usually a time when most of us reflect back on the past year and be thankful for all the blessings we’ve received.

And one way of giving thanks for all the great and small blessings is to give back during this season. A lot of people are in need of help and though we may not have all the resources to completely get them out of their situations, I’m sure they’ll appreciate whatever small gesture you give or do for them.

I think we all want to change the world and make it better. Unfortunately, it’s not an easy task. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do anything. We can make an impact by making small steps, by helping one person at a time.

There is no need to feel bad about not being able to do a HUGE thing for others. Sometimes, that seemingly small thing for us may already be huge in the eyes of others.

I remember the time that I together with some of my blogging buddies came together in 2011 to host a fundraising giveaway entitled “Give Love On Christmas Day”. Our goal was to donate at least $100 to a church in Manila, Philippines so they could host a feeding program for kids in the slum area.

A total of 23 blogs participated and we were able to raise $110 from the bloggers that participated, and we received an additional $300 from my relatives here in the US who also wanted to contribute to my goal of sharing some blessings to the less fortunate.

That amount may not be too big considering the number of kids in that area. But for that church and the kids that attended the event, it was a huge blessing!

Then there was this time in December last year when my friends and I hosted the #BloggersUnite event. Our goal then was to donate to an organization who we knew were helping the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. You can read about it here. But the short of it was that we were able to donate around $625 to the ABS-CBN Foundation.

It feels good to be able to give back. And I believe that when we give to the needy, no amount or gesture is too small. And just in case you need a little help in giving to others, you may want to enter the 2014 Holiday Sweepstakes from The Good Stuff!

  1. Giving is the best gift you can get, it blesses the recipient but it really blesses the giver!

  2. I try to do whatever I can for my neighbors. I will watch my neighbor’s dogs for her if she’s out visiting or doing something. I try to give canned goods to the Boy Scouts every year that they drop off a bag. Giving feels good and We do our best. Tim generally snow blows/shovels for the elderly neighbors when it snows all winter long. I do agree, however, that this time of year everyone seems a bit nicer and better. Don’t you just wish it could be that way all year long? I sure do! Thanks for the information on what you and some other bloggers have done in the past to help the less fortunate! Thanks again, Michele 🙂

  3. I think giving back is very important, and it should just be something that you do around the holidays, it should be something that you do year round, not just by giving financially but by volunteering your time as well.
