National Brush Day

Bloggin’ Mamas, which Bay Area Mommy is a member of, is supporting the Ad Council and The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives (a coalition of more than 35 leading dental health organizations) by sharing the word about “National Brush Day.”

National Brush Day is observed on November 1st, the day after Halloween, to reinforce the importance of children’s oral health and to promote good tooth-brushing habits recommended by dental experts.

More than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental related illness, resulting in parents losing 25 million work hours annually. Cavities and oral infections can cause severe pain and can increase a child’s risk for dental issues and poor health throughout their lives.

3 in 4 parents report that their kids sometimes or frequently forget to brush their teeth, according to a national survey just released by the Ad Council. In an effort to help parents better understand why ignoring dental health can have serious consequences, and educate families about good dental health habits, the Ad Council and The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives created new Public Service Ads (PSAs) for their Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign. The new PSAs are humorous depictions of life lessons which make the point that while parenting can be tricky at times, getting kids to brush for two minutes, twice a day can be easier than most other things parents will try to teach their children.

Visit 2min2x.org (which is available in English and Spanish, and includes a mobile version), where parents and children can watch entertaining videos—all 2 minutes in length—while brushing their teeth.

National Brush Day Giveaway – 5 Winners! — 25 Comments

  1. I learned that when children’s teeth break through the gums, use a children’s toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste in an amount no more than the size of a grain of rice.

  2. i learned Gently rubbing your child’s gums with a clean finger, a small, cool spoon or a wet gauze pad can soothe them.

  3. I’m not trying to be sarcastic. I honestly didn’t learn anything. You have to know that my kids are in their 30’s right now.

  4. I went to their site and I learned that there are cool apps for kids to like brushing their teeth.

  5. I learned use a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste for kids ages 3-6, and use slightly more when they’re older

  6. The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives recommends that you help or watch over your kids’ brushing until they’re 8.

  7. What I learned on their website is: Plaque is a sticky film of germs that forms on teeth and gums after eating. Plaque that’s not removed by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day can lead to cavities.

  8. Sticky foods, like potato chips, raisins and other dried fruit and candy are not easily washed away from your kid’s teeth by saliva, water or milk, so they have more cavity-causing potential.

  9. I learned some tricks I already knew with having grown kids and now with my grand kids i learned a new way when they are teething.

  10. I learned that after their permanent teeth come in they should not suck their thumbs as it would interfere with the proper growth of their mouth and teeth alinement.
