Exploring My New Toshiba Chromebook

As a blogger, it is imperative for me to always be connected to the internet. I can’t tell you how anxious I get during times when I couldn’t access my blog or my email or Facebook or Twitter. This is one of the reasons why my smartphone can be such a lifesaver. If I ever need to make changes to my posts or if a post that shouldn’t have been published yet got published, I can quickly do it.

Thing is, I prefer going on the internet using a laptop than a smartphone or tablet. I don’t know but the mobile interface somehow makes me feel claustrophobic, so I always set my phone/tablet to load desktop sites instead of mobile versions.

So I always just use my 2-year old MacBook Pro. I lug it around almost everywhere I go. It’s heavy, yes. It’s been running slow, yes. But I need a real browser on a laptop, not on a mobile phone or tablet.

Enter the Toshiba Chromebook.

It’s heaven-sent! (Well technically it was Toshiba-sent but you know what I mean.)

Exploring The Toshiba Chromebook

I’m currently transitioning from my MacBook Pro to the Toshiba Chromebook and I love that I can tweak some settings so that adjusting to the Chromebook wouldn’t be so hard. Let’s take the track pad for example.

On my MacBook, swiping 2 fingers up will make the browser scroll down. The opposite is true for the Chromebook. I’ve been scrolling the MacBook way for 2 years now so it won’t be easy to get used to the scrolling the opposite way, but I need not worry because I can simply go to the Keyboard Settings and set the track pad to scroll the way the MacBook does.

I think what’s really amazing about the Chromebook is that it only takes me 12-15 seconds from powering it up to the time I can actually start browsing the internet — that already included me typing in my account password! Compare that to my MacBook Pro which took 1 minute and 12 seconds — and I don’t even have a password on that! Check out this quick video I posted on Instagram!

The Chromebook will not in any way try to replace your full-featured laptop because you can’t install any programs on it. It’s basically a laptop that runs only the Google Chrome browser. It’s great for those of us who are always on the internet doing stuff — updating social networks, blogging, checking/sending email, researching, and even using basic Office applications (you can use Google Docs, Sheets or Slides for that)!

And if you’re like me, already using Google Chrome as your main browser, the transition will be a lot easier because you’ll have all your bookmarks and extensions synced with the Chromebook!

Check back here next time and I’ll show you the Chromebook in action!

Looking at the specs above, what feature of the Toshiba Chromebook do you like most? Let me know in the comments!

And guess what?! I’ll be doing a giveaway for one Toshiba 13″ Chromebook! The giveaway will be open to US and Canada residents and will start tomorrow morning! Be sure to be back here tomorrow so you can enter and have a chance to win it!

I wrote this post using my new 13″ Toshiba Chromebook which I received for purposes of evaluation. It’s perfect for an on-the-go blogging mom like me and for anyone who’s always on the internet!

  7. I agree that it’s much easier to use your PC then your cellphone to go online. This sounds like a great system. We have talked about getting a Chromebook especially for the kids. Maybe Santa will get them one.

  90. Thanks for the review. I have wondered about the chromebook and it seems like the way to go.

  91. I LOVE that it isn’t going to replace my mac but will speed things up when needing to use the internet

  92. I Love this Computer but I would be Happy to have any Computer at this Point! I Hate Asking my Mother if I Can Borrow hers every single day! I am 33 years old and I don’t Own any Tech Equipment of My Own, not even a Cell phone! I know times are Hard for so Many People Right Now! What I\’ve wanted for a long time is a laptop but seems there is always something else I feel we need more. However, reading the review on the Toshiba Chromebook, I think this could solve my problem. It is affordable and has the capabilities I need for my 12 hour day computer usage and does not have all the extra programs I don\’t use or need.

  95. I’ve read and herd a lot of good things about this Chromebook and I would love to have one.

  109. I’ve heard complaints about not being able to use another browser, but I too, always use Google so this works perfect for me.

  110. I REALLY LIKE THE 9 HOUR bATTERY LIFE but freebies are good too so the 116GB: 16GB Solid State Drive + 100GB Google Drive included (free for 2 years) is great too 🙂

  111. I love the 9 hour battery life, the 100GB oF Google Drive. My old notebook was soooo heavy. The mouse quit, then the battery died, and it was too old to replace, it went to the graveyard. I have been looking for one, but financially not able to do it right now. Would love to win this. Especially since it is so easy to use and lightweight. Love that!

  112. I LOVE that the Toshiba Chromebook lets you save and access ALL your files on the Cloud with 100GB of Google Drive space. Now THAT’s Impressive!!

  113. I could use another laptop like this for my blogging. Of course, it smaller in size, more portable, and hopefully lighter in the weight! 🙂

  114. I love that it is small enjough to carry around, yet powerful to use for everyday and only weighs 3lbs i would so love this.

  115. It is super slim and looks lightweight and I LOVE the battery life you get from this laptop!

  116. love the battery life and the portable size and weight of the chromebook and fase boot up time

  117. Thanks for sharing this info! I didn’t realize that you can’t download programs on the Chromebook. That actually makes me like it even more! It seems like it wouldn’t get bogged down if you can’t download programs on it. Everything I do on my computer is all on the internet anyway.

  118. I’ve been on computers for 18 years. I’d like to try a Chromebook just to see if it will do what I need to do. Sounds like it will might work just fine without all the bloatware we have in a normal laptop.

  119. Ilove Toshiba the make great things. I love how fast it boots up and since I dont do anything thats not on the internet it sounds great to me. I am in and out of hospital a lot and ambulance guys always tease me about how heavy m backpack is because of my netbook…now they wont even know its in there since this is so light. This would help so much with our homeschooling too since its so portable.

  120. This looks like a great laptop for a great price. 299! Can’t beat that.

  121. I Love the look of it, the versatility, size of the screen, the long battery life, the sd card reader , I love everything about it and would love to have this as I am just starting my own business!! :)♥♡ it

  122. Wow it does load fast! And it comes with a Built in Webcam too! My current Battery last about 40 Minutes so I would really like one that last 9 Hours.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  123. I love that it starts up quickly. Students have no time to waste, and kids are impatient, so the quick start up is a necessity if they are to use a Chromebook!

  124. I love to take pictures and really enjoy showing them to my family and friends but lugging around a big laptop makes it difficult. I love that the Chromebook offers a SD Card reader option!

  125. That sounds pretty good. I wouldn’t know how to use it. I’m so behind as far as technology goes, it’s ridiculous!

  126. I like that its a system that’s fast, simple and secure—and perfect for work and play. 😉

  127. I like that it so light and it doesn’t take all day to boot up, plus the batter life would be great going back and forth to school.

  128. i love the long 9 hr battery life. I have heard only good things about the chromebook, Would love to own one. My laptop is dieing.

  129. i love the compact design and the easy of use for my teenagers! would love to win this!

  130. I like that it’s lightweight and the fast boot time. I guess I’m spoiled by technological advances, but my six-year-old MacBook doesn’t seem as portable as it used to because it’s heavy, its battery is dead, and it doesn’t boot super quickly. The Chromebooks sound really nice, as long as you’re willing or able to do your computing exclusively in the cloud.

  131. I love the smooth multitasking. I tend to open too many different applications and windows at a time on our old computer and crash it. It would also help when i am using the computer and then one of the kids need to open a window quick to look something up or print a homework file. I also love the fact that it has a nine hour battery life. Our old laptop has to be plugged in constantly because it cannot hold a charge any more and it would be nice to be able to take this one to PTA, Cub Scout and Girl Scout meetings.

  132. like that the HD Webcam and Microphone for Chromebook comes with it so i dont have to go buy one

  133. I like that the upgrades and security are built in. It’s really a bummer to have to keep up with virus protection. The automatic updates are a plus. It’s one less thing to remember!

  134. I love the long battery life. 9 hours is super. I love how light it is. great review.

  135. I’m resending this because I got an error message the first time. I love how fast the Toshiba Chromebook loads and how lightweight it is. This would be the perfect laptop for me to start off with.

  136. The previous commenter already said what I was going to say (fast boot time), so the next best thing about this is that you cannot install any programs on it. This would be perfect for me because it would deter others in this household from using it!

  137. Quicker start up times are wonderful. My HP takes about a year to open email and is constantly hanging on opening or shut down. SIGH Looks like maybe I will have to consider a Chromebook. 🙂

  138. I like how quickly it starts up…my computer now I turn it on and go do some errands while I wait…lol

  139. I like that it has a webcam and up to 9 hours of battery life or you can plug it in.

  140. I would love a chromebook! There are so many awesome features.. but I love the 9 hour batterylife! 🙂

  141. The fast power up is a big plus for me. I hate to wait and this would help me a lot. I also love the 9 hour battery life.

  142. I think the coolest thing is either the fast startup, or the simplicity. I wasn’t sure what a Chromebook was exactly until I read this review, so thanks for all the info!

  143. I love how slim and lightweight it is. I’m not tech savvy enough to comment on all the specs but it sounds perfect for social networking on the go.

  144. I love that it has a battery that will last up to 9 hours but really like it in general.

  145. I love that the Toshiba Chromebook powers up so quickly, has a nine hour battery life and is SD Card capable.

    jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com

  146. I love that this has up to 9 hours battery life. I also love that the start up is so quick. There is nothing worse than wanting a quick answer for something and having to wait for your computer to load.

  147. The feature that I love the most about this laptop is definitely the battery life! Most laptops (including my current one) have such a short battery life, which can be very inconvenient!

  148. Like you said sometimes you just need to use an actual computer instead of your smartphone or tablets. I like that this laptop is really portable and light in weight. Good battery life and just something I could use since my computer went out on me. Thanks for the giveaway of one!!

  149. We like this Chromebook’s 116GB total hard drive: 16GB Solid State Drive + 100GB Google Drive (free for 2 years)

  150. I am definitely used to using Macs, but recently I’ve wanted to get a Chromebook instead. I already use Cloud data so I wouldn’t need all of my pictures and files on my laptop with me at all moments; it just slows down the computer! The chromebook is just much easier for school and travel and it looks beautiful too!

  151. I love the sleek design and that it boots in seconds. my computer is slow. I love that all my google apps are available on it also.

  152. Your review is awesome. If you ever quit your job you could sell these lol. I like so many of the features you listed. straight to net is awesome with only 12-15 seconds, built in webcam would be perfect for me with my grandchildren living half way across the world. The size is simply perfect

  153. I love the idea of a lightweight and portable laptop, as well as a lightweight and fast operating system. I’ve been hesitant to try the Chromebook because I’m used to being able to install programs. I wonder how I’d do. Your review definitely intrigues me. I’m down two computers and it would be difficult to replace two full-fledged laptops. I’m considering 1-2 Chromebooks, at least for the time being.

  154. I love everything about this Chromebook, but the battery life is just phenomenal!!! I’m also very tired of Windows and all of the problems that go along with it.

  155. I wanted to say what I like about this chromebook 1 that it has itel inside and 2 the battery life.

  156. I love the battery life and it’s slim design. right now I’m on a friends big ol dinosaur as my son pee’d on my nice fancy laptop and well, it wasn’t salvageable! This one is very bulky and just big! ive seen chromebooks at the store and i love them.

  157. I love Toshiba products! It has Google’s Chrome operating system, a 13.3-inch HD Display, the latest Intel processor, 16GB storage space and a 9 hour battery life. Plus it is ultra-light & fast… better than my OLD pc!!

  158. My oldest son has a Toshiba Chromebook and loves it — he is encouraging me to get one since my current computer has seen better days and needs replacement. I appreciate the review.

  159. Hi, Great post…I just started blogging and I am going a little overboard–not with posting, but with exploring other peoples blogs and enjoying their thoughts and lives.

  160. I was on the fence regarding buying a TV for my kitchen for a year. I kept going back and forth between a 24″ Fire TV and a separate 24″ TV and a Fire Stick 4 Kor Roku. But, ultimately decided on this product due to it going on sale for under $100 with a free Echo Dot. I slightly regret that decision, despite it only being a kitchen TV. As another person said, the interface is slow, and doesn’t like to open the apps smoothly on the first try. Also, I paired the TV with my kitchen Echo but I can’t get it to respond to voice commands at all. I have another TV with a Fire Stick and a Roku TV that both respond perfectly to commands through Alexa, but this Fire TV won’t even so much as turn on/off by voice command. The remote is nice, and the picture is not bad at all, but the software hiccups are a serious bummer.
