Maleficent Movie Review

Maleficent

If there’s one thing I love watching or reading, it’s books or movies that have a different take on the usual stories we know. That’s why I love the TV series “Once Upon A Time” so much. And that’s also why Maleficent is included in my list of must-watch movies.

“Maleficent” explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic “Sleeping Beauty” and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

The film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. It is produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, with Angelina Jolie, Don Hahn, Palak Patel, Matt Smith and Sarah Bradshaw serving as executive producers. Linda Woolverton wrote the screenplay.

Maleficent brings back childhood memories. The scenes that I used to see only from colored pages of fairy tale books came to life — the moors, legendary creatures such as elves, gnomes, pixies and especially fairies. I can’t help but feel the awe in seeing how the enchanted forest came to life. The plot narrates the story behind why Maleficent (the evil witch) cast a spell on the baby princess Aurora.

The movie was about an untold story of betrayal that led to revenge which is what we don’t read or see in the traditional Sleeping Beauty story. I love the story’s twist! You just have to watch how this story depicts a true love’s kiss. There are scenes and lines that will just make you laugh and sometimes get emotional or cheesy.

One thing I felt is the soft spot, the “heart” of the movie, especially for me as a mom. The reality is that no matter how evil one can get, in the end there’s still a never-ending search for love and peace.

  31. This is a very clever twist by telling the background behind the original story. I love Angelina Jolie and shall enjoy this movie.

  32. I really can’t wait to see Maleficent. Your review has made me want to see it even more. Even as a child I loved Maleficent and the green smokey substance that seemed to proceed and follow her wherever she went. Everyone was so afraid of Maleficent even though she was an animated character when I saw the first movie so long ago. I loved her hats and veils and flowing dresses with the trains sweeping along behind her. I wasn’t afraid; I just thought she was misunderstood. Angelina is perfect for this role and I am anxiously awaiting the time when I can see it. I believe her youngest daughter, the twin girl is playing the young Aurora. Thanks again for your excellent review!

    • Hi Deborah! Yes! They say all the other kids were scared of Angelina in costume and the only one who wasn’t was her daughter. 🙂

  33. I can’t make up my mind about this one, if I should watch it with my son or after he goes to bed. I’m not sure if this movie is too scary for him or not. He does scare easily. What do you think? Oh, he is 10.

    • Hmm.. I didn’t find it scary at all. I think the only scary parts are the battle scenes, maybe you can cover his eyes and ears during those parts. 🙂

  34. I loved this movie and I will definitely want to get it on DVD when it comes out to that platform.

  35. We never made it to the theater to see this, so I am really hoping it will be out on DVD by Christmas!

  36. I can’t believe I still haven’t seen this movie! I don’t know if it’s still playing in my town or not or if I’ll have to wait until it comes out on video. Either way I really want to see this.

  37. Thanks for the review!! I’m looking forward to watching this movie. Can’t wait to see into Maleficent’s character more than Disney let us!
