I am participating in the #HPInkChallenge where we’ll put original and refill inks to a test to see the difference between the two. I received two free HP Deskjet 3510 printers and supplies from HP as well as a gift card to purchase refilled cartridges in order to participate the Challenge. All opinions and views expressed are my own.
So last week, I did a post about the first week of my journey in the HP Ink Challenge. I mentioned that there wasn’t really much of a difference in the print quality of the HP Original Ink and the Costco Refill. I printed about 15 pages of both text and image heavy documents that time.
Now for the second week of my HP Ink Challenge journey, I printed 15 pages of text and image-heavy documents again. Let me show you some photos.
Please note that I increased the brightness settings of the photos above so you can clearly see the difference in print quality. The original photo was a bit too dark (blame the iPhone 5 LOL) to actually show the difference.
The pages shown on the photo above are the 29th page printed on each printer/ink. You can see that the Original is still okay while the Refill’s color is already fading and there’s so much banding and streaking.
But here’s a photo comparing the two on a text document.
As you can see, there’s not much of a difference between the two types of ink when it’s just a text document. The Refill Ink just gets tired a little too easily when printing lots of images.
Interesting, right? Please watch out for my next #HPInkChallenge update!

It’s interesting that Hewlett Packard is promoting this comparison. I thought I would save some money and refill the color cartridge at Costco. It was a really big savings $9.99 at Costco and HP #61 29.99 at Walmart. The color seemed to be fine until one day it stop working telling me I wasn’t using genuine HP ink. I had no choice but to go Walmart and spend $29.99. Needless to say I wasn’t pleased. I feel if I am happy with the quality of the print with the lower cost ink, then I should be allowed to use it.
The problme I get when I do refills is much like the previous commenter: my printer eventually goes into a spazz mode telling me there is a problem with the cartridges even though I know they are full, inserted correctly, alogned, etc. So not worth the savings to get refills. Although I suspect HP does this to their printers on purpose….
I don’t know…I use the refill ink “For Dummies” brand and haven’t had a problem yet.
Thank you for sharing this comparison. Have a lovely day.
