A Fun Backyard Construction Project: DIY Pond Building

It would be a fun project to build your own pond in your backyard. The finished product will surely make you proud that it would most likely be your favorite place in your home.

DIY Pond Building

If you are skilled enough to do the project yourself, you can dive right ahead into the DIY project.

If not, you might want to read up a bit on the subject matter to see if it is a project that you are really willing to undertake.Β Once you have decided that it is something that you want to do, start making a plan. Among the things that you need to consider when planning your DIY Pond Building Project are:

DIY Pond Consideration #1: Location.

You have to know where you want to place your backyard pond and how big you want it to be. Be sure to think about the surrounding areas as well. You cannot have your pond occupy the area from your perimeter fence to your home’s exterior walls. Make sure too that you do not dig your pond near any trees.

DIY Pond Consideration #2: Materials.

When you know where you want to put your pond, you can already take measurements so you know how much material you need to buy. Make a list of all the materials that you need and note their corresponding measurements. Look up stores where you can buy your materials.

DIY Pond Consideration #3: Schedule.

You cannot possibly complete this DIY project in one day. Find out if you really have room in your schedule to spend building your backyard pond. Do not let your project drag on for long. You have to finish your backyard pond building project within a reasonable time frame.

A Fun Backyard Construction Project: DIY Pond Building — 31 Comments

  1. The previous person built a “pond” small one in our back yard. I hate it … lol. I am looking foward to getting it out of my back yard. πŸ˜€

  2. Oh building a pond in the back yard for fish and frogs lily pads etc sounds so fun I think I might try that

  3. I would LOVE to have a pond in our backyard. That would be such a beautiful thing. Since I can’t have a pool a pond would be just as nice and really make the back look so much better.. I would want a small waterfall in it too.. πŸ™‚

  4. This is on my someday wishlist, after we finish all the indoor and other gardening projects we have lined up. I picture a little pond with a stone ledge for planters and a bench to sit and enjoy.

  5. A few years back we built a pond in my mother’s back yard and although it was back-breaking work, the pond liner itself helped a lot. And it looks beautiful. One caveat though: check your local by-laws before starting: you may be required to put a fence around your pond to keep local children safe!

  6. This post made me chuckle. My husband had good intentions years ago and dug out a nice, round spot in our backyard for a pond. Well… it never got completed. We have since moved and recently, when we were back in our old stomping grounds, we drove past our old house to see what changes had been made. And, there it was… still a round hole, with grass and weeds growing in it. πŸ™‚

  7. backyard ponds are fun to build.. if you know what you are doing πŸ˜€

  8. Sounds like a very fun and rewarding summer project! πŸ™‚ Of course, i would want a duck or two. πŸ™‚

  9. I did this in my old house in Texas. It was great fun… for a while. We had even stocked the pond with fish. And then we found out how much trouble the pumps and filters get to be. Along with how quickly fish will disappear out of your pond.
I do plan to do it again here in our new house, and I have the perfect spot. But I think I will just stock it with a few geese or ducks this time.

  10. It would be tranquil sitting outdoors with a pond in the yard. Anything to get out of mowing. My husband cuts the front. My job is the back yard.

  11. Our family is planning on putting a pond in our front yard – thanks for the tips!

  14. We want to do something similar to this.. but we are going to dig a hole, fill it with pond liner, put a TIRE in the hole to hold the liner and the water and fill it that way πŸ™‚ Recycling and instant holder πŸ˜‰

  15. i had to tell you…i told my hubby about the pond idea and he agreed to do it. We went last night to purchase all the things we need to start this project. i am so happy.
