My Preeclampsia Birth Story

Preeclampsia Birth Story

Preeclampsia is having high blood pressure and high protein levels in the urine during pregnancy.

And preeclampsia was why my baby was born premature. One day during my 35th week of pregnancy, I had 2 seizures. I thought I was just dreaming during the first seizure — I didn’t even know that that was a seizure! I just found it odd that I couldn’t control the twitching movement of my head and my fingers. So I just went back to sleep thinking I might just be tired.

I woke up again, went to the kitchen to get some oatmeal, went back to the room, then it happened again. But since I splattered my oatmeal onto the carpet and bed, I realized everything was real and that I need to get myself checked by the doctor.

My mother-in-law was just in the kitchen. She quickly drove me to the hospital and, since she works there, brought me straight to Labor & Delivery. The nurses asked me about my symptoms, told me that those were seizures and they checked my vitals. It turned out my blood pressure meds was too high and I had preeclampsia.

Taking out the placenta is the only cure to preeclampsia.

So they needed to induce labor and deliver the baby. After a few minutes of being induced though, my baby’s heart rate slowed down. They suddenly declared a certain Code (“Code C” if I’m not mistaken), took me out of my room and into the delivery room for an emergency cesarian section.

The nurses were moving so quickly, my husband was (and his mom and a couple of our friends were) panicking, and I was too dizzy to remember everything. But I remember whispering a prayer to God to take care of my baby, guide my husband as he raises the baby, and comfort my mom. Because I knew there was a possibility that I won’t get out of the hospital alive.

But I survived. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days because the preeclampsia continued on for a couple of days. They had to monitor my blood pressure every 30 minutes and I was under medication all day.

The doctor said there is a 30% chance that I’ll have preeclampsia if I get pregnant again in the future.

And that’s why my husband is having second thoughts about having another baby. But we are leaving it all to God. If it’s His will for us to have another child, then so be it. I believe having a baby should be seen as a blessing. And if we get multiples, then it’s a multiple blessing from Him!

  1. I’m so thankful everything worked out fine, after your scary childbirth experience. I too, experienced a dangerous birthing experience. God bless you and your family.

  2. Ah! My heart sinks for women who have complications during pregnancy or if they can’t get pregnant at all. It makes me feel blessed that the worst thing for me was an insanely itchy belly the last week of my second pregnancy.

  3. I love the Dainty Blossoms Dress! When having my 2nd child my husband fainted while filming and missed the very moment my daughter let out her first cry. All you could see was a pic of the ceiling in the room. You could hear the nurses saying to help him grab him but I still miss seeing her first moments but still feel so sorry for him too.

  4. It’s scary how fast things can get bad. Good thing you made it to the hospital and are blessed with your child.

  5. I’m so sorry that you had pre-eclampsia and hope that your next pregnancy is complicaation-free.

  6. I didn’t have your condition but I went from having a normal birth to crashing in a matter of minutes and being rushed into a room for a c-section. I never even asked what happened because I really didn’t want to know. Me and my son were OK and that was enough for me.

  7. I had preeclampsia when I was pregnant with my son. I went to the hospital a week before my due date because my contractions had started. When I got there they said I was dilated to 1 and that I would be able to get up and walk around after they took my blood pressure. Then they said that I had high blood pressure so I would have to wait until it went down. Well it never went down. It was the highest the nurses had ever seen a mothers blood pressure during labor. The induced me and a few hours later I gave birth to my son. I had him vaginally but since they put me on drugs for the preeclampsia I was losing blood like a water fountain. It was horrible but my baby was healthy and I was alive.

  8. I adore the Girls Sunsuit- Small Floral! I am due with a girl this summer and Little Me has so many cute clothes!

  9. I love the expression on the baby girl in the dress category, what a great picture!!

  10. The outfits are so cute and preppy. I would love to order some of these cute little nautical outfits for my friend having a baby.

  11. I had a friend at work that had a preeclampsia birth. So much more stress on you as a mother.

  12. I had preeclampsia with both of my pregnancies. The first one they enduced me at 37 weeks and after 14 hours of labor they did an emergency c-section. Which meant being put under. My son was born very close to midnight, and I didn’t wake up til after 3am so I technically didn’t meet him the day he was born, I woke up and the nurse showed me his picture. I cried until they got me to my baby boy. My second was a scheduled c-section since I live in a small town with no VBAC, and I got to see him right away and hold him as soon as they got me closed up. Even though it wasn’t the “traditional” birth for either, I treasure bringing my boys into this world and every minute I have with them. It goes by way too fast!

  13. Glad you were able to make it through that. =) This program sounds very interesting!

  14. That is a scary situation. I fully agree with you in trusting in God. He will guide you and direct you. Thank you for sharing this story and God Bless
