The Sparkle Box Book Review

Let’s admit it. When kids think about Christmas, they get excited because they think about receiving gifts. While it is true that Christmas is a time when kids receive lots of presents, I believe it’s important for them to really know why we’re celebrating in the first place. I received a copy of a book entitled “The Sparkle Box” so I could do a review on it.

Now take note that I usually don’t do book reviews anymore. The reason for which is that I feel like there’s never enough time for me to take a seat and read a book from cover to cover then do a full-length review on it. But when I read the basic summary of this book, I knew it was a good read so here I am doing a review.

The Sparkle Box is about Sam who’s excited about Christmas because of the parties, the food and of course the gifts.

But he got really curious about a sparkling silver box which, according to his parents, will only be opened on Christmas eve. They had to fill it first. I don’t want to tell everything here but in the end, Sam realizes how important it is to give to others and to help people whenever we can.

The Bible says “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40). And this story encourages us to bless others and see it as a way of glorifying God. It encourages the reader to start a tradition of doing good to others, writing it down and placing it inside a sparkle box — because this is the true meaning of Christmas.

The author of the book is Jill Hardie whose family began placing a gift for Jesus under their Christmas tree as a way of bringing more meaning to the holiday. The first time they opened His gift, the commercialism of the season melted away and they felt a profound joy and peace. Jill hopes that The Sparkle Box will spark a new Christmas tradition, bringing light into thousands of lives.

The Sparkle Box is a great book that teaches good values and is something I’d like my son to read when he’s old enough. Although I can already start reading it to him, I want him to be able to read it when he can already really understand and take it to heart. What’s awesome is that the book comes with an actual sparkle box so that you and your family can start this tradition

This book truly has the power to change Christmas. It takes the focus away from the material gifts and shifts it to the real and more important meaning of the holiday.

BUY IT! The Sparkle Box is available for purchase on Ideal Books and Amazon.com.

  1. I am not much of a book reader myself, but I find the topic of this one very interesting. Too often I believe, people do not realize the real meaning of the season. It’s wonderful to teach children at a young age, although I do believe it’s a personal decision. Thank you for this review and I hope this book makes a difference in someone’s life!

  2. I love the idea of a sparkle box. This book could help people get a reality check on holidays

  3. Very intersting. I’ve heard of Sparkle Box and I thought it was a subscription service where you get a box every month, thanks for clarifying. Not sure how I came up with that! It sounds like a really cute book that I want to read to my kids. I remember how much I loved when my mom read to us!

  6. I love getting books for my family that help them to be better people, and doing it in story form always works best for mine. I want them to enjoy Christmas..the lights trees, music, food, gifts,,,but I also want them to remember to think of others and what they can do for them .This year we will be barely making it..but there are still things we can do for others, like gifts of time. This book sounds like one we need,

  7. I have never heard of The Sparkle Box before. I do find it a good book as to help change the idea of Christmas – the true meaning of it. i do think even young children should learn how to give and the joy you get from doing it. This would be a good book for children as also some adults sure could do with reading it too. Thanks for the review.

  8. If I had children I would buy this! For sure. A very nice reveiw here.

    Happy Holidays,

  9. This is awesome. I would love to start a tradition like this with my grandchildren, to teach them what Christmas is really about. Whoever thought of this, has a really big heart.

  10. when my children were little I also tried to make them understand ‘the reason for the season’. We always went to Mass on Christmas Eve. Our church always held a children’s mass around 7pm on Christmas Eve. Perfect timing for the kids to go to bed after. Then on Christmas day we always had a birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday to Jesus. Once my daughter asked why we get the presents if it is Jesus’ birthday. I told her that he loves us so much that he wants to share all his gifts with us. She told me that she was glad he liked pink shoes. LOL

I love the idea of the sparkle box. I think I may get it for my grandchildren.

  12. I love this! What a wonderful way to teach kids the real meaning of Christmas and not get caught up in all the commercialism!

  13. This is very interesting. having just ended the holidays. I think my kids could both get something from this kind of project. What age is the reading level appropriate for?

  14. This is so touching and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing! I will be reading this to my daughter, come Christmas 2013. You have inspired me.

  16. Every year around that time I get really down in the dumps.Everybody talking about what to buy, how much to spend, it goes on and on.I get so depressed, I do good to put up a small tree and decorate at all. Everyone says how happy they are, what good loot did you get…That isn’t what it’s about.

  17. This sounds like a wonderful story and something that every little boy and girl should read and enjoy! I love when a book and stir up emotions and the child and learn and know such a positive action can do so much.
